Sony and Honda have signed an MoU that outlines their intent to establish a JV (“New Company”) for electric vehicles (EV). A press release from Honda says. Through this new company, they plan to engage in the joint development and sales of high value-added battery electric vehicles.
This alliance, still in formation, aims to merge Honda’s and Sony’s expertise in their fields of operations.
Honda has mobility development capabilities, vehicle body manufacturing technology and after-sales service management experience cultivated over many years. While Sony has immense experience in the development and application of imaging, sensing, telecommunication, network, and entertainment technologies.
The alliance will help realize a new generation of mobility and services that are in harmony with the ecosystem.
Honda and Sony expect the sales of the first EV model from the JV company to start in 2025.
Plans for the roles of this new company are to design, develop, and sell the EVs, but not own and operate manufacturing facilities. So, the expectation is Honda will be responsible for manufacturing the first EV model at its vehicle manufacturing plant. On the other hand, a mobility service platform will be developed by Sony and made available for the New Company.
