Starting from 2023, the Austrian Post aims to purchase only EVs for delivery tasks according to a press release.
The country’s leading postal and logistics services provider will augment its fleet with 800 new electric vehicles this year itself. Next year, this number will increase with up to 1300 new electric vehicle purchases for its fleet.
It will be able to achieve its sustainable zero-emissions operations goals much earlier. All thanks to the conducive conditions due to rapid developments in technologies and a strong determination from the governments.
Investments of over € 80 million in electric vehicles and charging infrastructure will be done in 2022 and 2023.
The Austrian Post already operates the country’s largest fleet of around 2500 e-vehicles comprising approximately 1100 e-bikes, e-mopeds, e-trikes and almost 1400 e-transporters.
It aims for zero-emissions operations across Austria by 2030 for delivering all packages, letters, print media and advertising mailings.
Ability to serve 90 percent delivery regions using pure electric mobility
E-cargo bikes from Draisin and other solutions from manufacturers such as Kyburz and Jet Flyer are suitable for smart city logistics in urban areas.
The Austrian Post relies on the manufacturer Citroën, Opel, Nissan and Renault for small trucks with a loading volume of around 4 m³.
For a loading volume of over 11 m³, the large e-transporters come from MAN and Mercedes.
E-vehicles from Peugeot have a load volume of 6 m³ and a significantly increased range. As a result, they are highly suitable for use in rural regions.
Alone with the number of e-mobility options today, the Post is in a position to serve 90 percent of Austrian delivery regions.
Since 2011, the Post’s e-vehicles have become extremely popular with suppliers and are high-suitable for frequent start-stop operations.
The life cycle of EVs is already cheaper for the Austrian Post than the use of an equivalent IC engine vehicle. This is mainly due to much lower operating costs and maintenance requirements.
Charging points, photovaltaic system and battery reuse
Along with EVs, the Austrian Post is also pushing augmenting charging infrastructure, with additional 6000 charging points. All new post bases already come with the appropriate charging points as standard.
Photovoltaic systems for electricity generation are being prepared for rental properties or are being built for their own projects.
The use of smart charging software enables the charging of a large number of vehicles overnight.
